Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) Lags Bitcoin ETF By Nine Points As Dollar Reserve Climbs To $4.8 Billion

Why This Matters

Strategy’s shift from bitcoin accumulation toward reserve-building and capital management could affect one of the largest corporate bitcoin holders’ future buying and selling activity. The $1.25 billion sale framework and expanded cash reserve signal that shareholder distributions, debt-related obligations and buybacks may take priority over additional bitcoin purchases.

Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) shares rose 5% to $97.95 on Monday afternoon, but the modest bounce does little to offset a punishing year-to-date performance that has left the company well behind the benchmark it was designed to beat.

Through Monday, Strategy stock was down 36% year-to-date and down 73% over the past year, while the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ: IBIT) was down just 27% over the same period in 2026.

Strategy markets itself as a leveraged bitcoin exposure vehicle, meaning a down year for the underlying asset translates into steeper losses for shareholders, and the premium investors once paid for that leverage has meaningfully compressed.

The company did not buy or sell any bitcoin during the seven-day period ended August 16, leaving its total holdings at 840,447 BTC purchased at an average price of $75,385 per coin.

That figure represents a decline from a peak above 847,300 BTC, a shift that reflects a series of sales totaling approximately 6,948 BTC for roughly $432 million since May, including a 1,690 BTC sale earlier in the month that generated around $108 million.

At roughly $63,500 per bitcoin, Strategy’s holdings are worth approximately $53.4 billion against the $63.36 billion the company paid, leaving an unrealized shortfall of around $9.9 billion, according to reporting from Decrypt.

Strategy sold roughly 3,458,866 shares of common stock through its at-the-market program last week for $333.7 million in net proceeds, at an average price of $96.48 per share, down from $99.17 the prior week.

Those proceeds were allocated three ways: $52.4 million toward STRC preferred dividends, $132.2 million to repurchase STRC shares, and $149.1 million directed into the company’s dollar reserve.

The company’s dollar reserve reached $4.8 billion, up from $4.65 billion a week earlier and approximately $1.5 billion higher than it stood three weeks prior, providing a significant buffer against near-term forced selling.

Strategy’s buyback program took in 1,388,720 STRC shares, leaving $653 million remaining under the $1 billion Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program announced June 29, while a separate $1 billion authorization covering MSTR common stock has not yet been used.

Bloomberg reported that executive chairman Michael Saylor announced a pivot at the end of June away from bitcoin accumulation and toward capital management, and that Saylor first floated abandoning his “never sell” position as early as May.

Strategy has framed the transactions as mechanisms for funding preferred dividends and building its reserve, rather than signaling a broader strategic retreat from its bitcoin-focused identity.

A June capital framework permits up to $1.25 billion of bitcoin sales for dividends, interest, buybacks, and reserve purposes, of which roughly $429 million has been used, leaving approximately $820 million of untouched capacity.

Bitcoin itself recovered from a weekend dip below $63,000 and was trading around $63,500 on Monday, up 0.9% over 24 hours, offering modest relief to crypto-linked equities across the board.

For investors who purchased Strategy specifically for bitcoin exposure, the structural argument is increasingly strained, given that IBIT holds bitcoin directly with full volatility, no additional leverage, and no corporate overhead to weigh on returns.

The Bitwise Crypto Industry Innovators ETF (NYSEARCA: BITQ) was up 14% year-to-date through Friday, illustrating that crypto-linked equities broadly have outperformed Strategy during this period despite their own concentration risks.

Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) was down 34% year-to-date through Friday but rose 1% to $150.60 on Monday, while MARA Holdings (NASDAQ: MARA) carried a positive year-to-date return of 2% and gained 1% to $9.34 on the same session.

Retail sentiment on both Strategy and Bitcoin improved to bearish from extremely bearish over the past day, according to data from Stocktwits, suggesting some stabilization in market psychology even as fundamentals remain under pressure.

The constructive case for Strategy rests on the $4.8 billion dollar reserve reducing forced-selling risk, the scale of its bitcoin position, and the untouched $1 billion common stock buyback authorization that could be deployed to support share prices.

The bear case centers on share dilution through progressively lower at-the-market sales, the pause in bitcoin accumulation, and the widening performance gap versus IBIT that investors will be watching closely through the remainder of the year.
