Social media influencers promoting cryptocurrency trading platforms are failing to meet UK financial promotion standards in large numbers, raising questions about how prepared the industry is for tighter regulation of digital assets.

An analysis of 57 of the most-viewed posts promoting or advising on crypto products across TikTok and Instagram found that 89 per cent contained at least one potential compliance issue. The findings come as the Financial Conduct Authority prepares to introduce a new regulatory framework for crypto firms, increasing the pressure on businesses and their marketing partners to meet higher standards.

The research, conducted by financial promotions compliance platform Adclear, found that risk disclosure was the most common weakness. More than half of the posts analysed (56 per cent) made no reference to the financial risks associated with cryptocurrency trading. The proportion rose to 69 per cent on Instagram, compared with 43 per cent on TikTok.

Other shortcomings included a lack of balance between the potential risks and rewards of crypto investment, found in 40 per cent of posts, while 54 per cent failed to make clear that content was advertising, sponsored or part of a commercial partnership.

A further 30 per cent failed to state that past performance is not a reliable guide to future returns. Seven per cent of posts were judged not to be fair, clear and non-misleading, while 11 per cent went further by promising guaranteed investment returns.

More crypto buyers are using social media for crypto research

The findings are particularly significant because social media has become an increasingly important source of information for retail investors. FCA research has found that 29 per cent of people who buy cryptoassets use social media as part of their research beforehand.

The regulator is preparing to bring crypto trading further into the mainstream of the UK financial system, with new rules due to take effect from October 2027. The framework is intended to introduce stronger requirements around financial resilience and market integrity as the government seeks to establish the UK as a global regulated centre for digital assets.

That transition is likely to increase scrutiny of how crypto products are marketed to consumers, particularly younger investors who may rely heavily on social media personalities rather than traditional financial advisers or investment research.

For influencers, the regulatory risks extend beyond whether a post contains an obvious advertisement. Financial promotions must be presented in a way that is fair, clear and not misleading, while appropriate risk warnings and disclosures are essential when promoting high-risk investments.

Most regulatory issues have an easy fix

The analysis suggests that many of the problems are relatively straightforward to address. Clearer risk warnings, explicit advertising disclosures and a more balanced presentation of potential returns and losses would resolve some of the most common deficiencies.

“Crypto trading is set to become an increasingly mainstream part of our investing landscape,” said Joe Jordan, chief commercial officer and co-founder of Adclear. “With new rules on the way, this is a great moment for cryptofluencers to double down on aligning with FCA guidelines.”

The comparison with other forms of financial promotion also offers some context. Adclear’s analysis found crypto influencers to be more compliant than influencers promoting buy now, pay later products, but less compliant than broader financial influencer content.

The timing nevertheless leaves the industry with a substantial period to improve its practices before the new crypto regime takes effect. As retail participation grows and social media becomes a more important channel for investment information, regulators are likely to focus increasingly on whether promotional content gives consumers an accurate picture of risk.

For crypto businesses, the findings underline that compliance is no longer simply a matter of satisfying formal regulatory requirements. The influencers used to reach customers are becoming part of the industry’s wider regulatory perimeter and their content could increasingly determine how effectively the sector earns the trust of mainstream investors.
