Bitcoin has pushed back above two technical levels that traders treat like a pass/fail exam: the 50-day moving average and the short-term holder (STH) realized price. When spot price sits above both, recent buyers are in profit, which tends to reduce panic selling and create conditions for further upside.

The STH realized price reflects the average cost basis of coins held for fewer than 155 days. When those holders are underwater, they tend to capitulate. When they’re above water, they tend to hold, or even buy more.

What the numbers say

The 50-day moving average and exponential moving average have recently tracked in the $64,000 to $65,000 range, with BTC reclaiming approximately $64,300 during mid-August analysis.

The STH realized price as of mid-August sat around $67,124 to $67,152.

Earlier this year, Bitcoin staged a rally in May when it surged above a then-current STH cost basis of roughly $79,000. That move prompted analysts to float price targets as high as $92,000.

Why cost basis matters more than most indicators

The STH realized price incorporates actual transaction data from the Bitcoin blockchain, tracking the price at which coins most recently moved between wallets. When Bitcoin trades below this level, recent buyers are staring at red numbers, creating a feedback loop of selling that pushes price lower, putting more holders underwater, which creates more selling.
